Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin opened a new chapter of collaboration in Hong Kong, reaffirming deep bonds with Asian developers. The opening ceremony for the 'Hong Kong Ethereum Community Hub' in Sai Wan, Hong Kong, on the 21st local time was attended by a large number of key figures from organizations including Buterin, the Ethereum Foundation, SNZ, and ETHTAO, adding significance to the event. There, he shared reflections on 13 years of ecosystem development, offering insights into his technical vision and future outlook. At the event, Buterin vividly recalled the moment he first connected with the Chinese community in 2013. He stated, "We took the first steps of the community in a small office in Shanghai at that time," and expressed his emotions, saying, "Now, over a decade later, it is incredibly moving to see the establishment of Asia's first physical hub here in Hong Kong." He also extended deep gratitude to the developers and investors in Asia who have steadfastly supported the ecosystem through years of market volatility, adding that he hopes this hub will grow into a key link connecting Asia with the global network. In technical discussions, he presented a clear stance on the currently much-discussed Layer 2 solutions. Buterin pointed out, "While numerous Layer 2 projects are emerging, they should not merely imitate existing frameworks." He emphasized, "True Layer 2 technology must have a clear purpose that addresses users' actual needs and fundamentally solves scalability issues," underlining the importance of qualitative growth. He also mentioned the need for countermeasures against the emerging future security threat of quantum computer attacks. Regarding the future direction of technological development, he offered an optimistic outlook. Buterin analyzed that the latest technologies can significantly contribute to code verification and resolving security vulnerabilities, and will also play a crucial role in security hardware and computational acceleration. He assessed, "If the past few years were about laying the technological foundation, now is the stage to create tools that solve real-world problems using technologies like zero-knowledge proofs and enhanced privacy." Finally, he urged all participants not to lose their initial purpose, advising, "The ultimate goal of a great project is to solve the challenges humanity faces," and "Rather than being swayed by short-term price fluctuations, focus your energy on how technology can improve daily life." The newly opened Hong Kong hub, supported by the Ethereum Foundation, is expected to serve as a central point promoting education and collaboration among developers in the Asian region.
