The Korean Economic Newspaper announced a clear policy regarding the scraping and redistribution of its articles. The newly issued guidelines warn that if external parties such as readers or media reproduce, redistribute, or distribute the content without permission, they may be held liable under copyright law.
At the heart of the policy is an explicit rule stating that “the copyrighted material is provided only to readers and media of the Korean Economic Newspaper; reproducing, redistributing, or distributing it without permission, as well as using it for AI training, is prohibited.” This measure strengthens copyright protection while reaffirming the responsibilities of both content creators and consumers.
In particular, when articles are scraped, restrictions apply only to the “scraped copy” rather than the original copyrighted material; reproducing or redistributing the original text in its entirety is a clear violation that carries legal penalties. The same rule applies equally to any party wishing to use copyrighted works both online and offline.
A Korean Economic Newspaper representative said: “This policy is intended to prevent unauthorized redistribution, reproduction, or distribution of copyrighted content, and even when reusing it on media such as blogs or SNS, a clear acknowledgment of the original source is required.” The statement emphasized that strengthening copyright protection is necessary amid changing domestic and international media environments, warning that if this policy takes effect, legal liability may be imposed.
