After banks such as Jeju Bank, Jae Bank, Hyundai Capital received hacker attacks, the Financial Committee convened an emergency meeting. The meeting on April 4 at Seoul City Hall had representatives of financial sector associations and CEOs of the companies to review the situation and propose additional measures.
Initially the committee had planned for each bank to conduct internal security checks on July 7 and report results, but due to additional damage found at Hyundai Capital, Yegaram Jeju Bank etc., they held meeting earlier. They reviewed recent hacker attack tendencies and scale of damages, and proposed measures to prevent similar incidents.
Especially Shinhan, KB Kookmin, Hana, BNK Busan Banks had about 40,000 customers’ personal data leaked. Hyundai Capital confirmed that some personal data of 146 employees in the recruitment program had been exposed. Financial authorities say not yet determined if same hacker group; they will investigate further on possible link with other attacks discovered during internal checks.
The committee chair said “We need more time to confirm whether this is same hacker or different group etc” and called for security reinforcement across financial sector.
