Microsoft has recently announced internally that it intends to cut operating costs of its Azure cloud platform by 20 %. This sort of move does not appear to be a directive from leadership, but rather seems to have been driven internally within the organization. According to the report, cost cutting is being considered at a company‑wide level rather than specific departments.
The person responsible for the report was Girish Bablani, operations manager of the Azure software division; he had said that in recent weeks he instructed senior leaders to prepare plans for cost reduction. The organization has about 11,500 employees, and how this scale will affect the overall Azure business is still unclear. Moreover, the items and departments subject to cost cuts have not been specified concretely.
A Microsoft spokesperson replied to internal report that “Azure leadership did not direct a cost‑cutting plan”. He said the company must respond positively or negatively according to market conditions; also he added that there is no direct link between this plan and company's financial planning. Also, which areas will actually apply and what costs and staff reduction will be remain undecided.
At present it is difficult to determine Azure business shrinkage from this report alone; when actual measures are announced, the scope and effect of cost cuts must be clearly confirmed. Microsoft needs to separately examine whether the internal narrative differs from official position.
