Japanese video‑game developers are actively exploring new revenue models and growth strategies by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) technology. By the second half of 2023, while many domestic stocks surged on AI-related themes, Japan’s game industry is diversifying its business model by blending strong IP‑based content with semiconductor supply networks.
First, AI‑driven games that utilize the character and storytelling assets built over decades have dramatically increased user engagement. For example, the “Pokémon” series introduced an AI‑powered new generation and adaptive system in early 2024, resulting in a 12 % sales increase compared to the previous year. This is seen as a shift from merely producing content to personalizing user experience and diversifying revenue streams.
Second, this development also stands out in its relationship with the semiconductor industry. Major domestic semiconductor firms are expanding cooperation with game studios, jointly building data sets for AI model training and supply chains. In one instance, “SAMSUNG” and “HITACHI” jointly developed an AI model, reporting an 18 % increase in semiconductor component production efficiency.
Third, market analysis suggests that such collaboration holds great potential to dramatically reshape the revenue structure of the game industry. By building new product lines that combine AI‑based content with semiconductor components, both industries can generate mutually reinforcing growth effects.
