Samsung Display announced on June 26, 2024 that its domestic display manufacturing company will supply two new types of vehicle‑grade OLED screens to the U.S. market. The products come in 24.6‑inch and 13.2‑inch sizes and are installed on General Motors’ flagship all‑electric SUV ‘GV90.’
When the GV90 was revealed, a 24.6‑inch OLED is mounted in the center of the cabin; its display expands 1.7 times compared to the wide‑format 23.6‑inch screen while driving. The resolution is 3840 × 1440 pixels and the color gamut is DCI‑P3 at 100 %—an industry standard used for digital cinema. This high resolution and colour fidelity deepen the in‑vehicle visual experience required by an all‑electric SUV.
Samsung Display uses a double‑layered organic light‑emitting layer (OLED) with a sandwich structure that optimizes brightness and longevity simultaneously. The approach reduces power consumption by about 30 % compared to LCD while delivering 70 % better performance. A pop‑up style that can move the screen up or down is lightweight, helps space utilisation inside the vehicle and offers a solid basis for future design and engineering of automotive displays.
On the front seats of the GV90, a 13.2‑inch OLED screen is installed; it allows simultaneous use of video content and meeting tasks such as a workspace on both sides of the display. This represents a strategic choice that expands vehicle in‑cabin screens beyond driving information to a broader content and work environment. On General Motors’ official GV90 introduction page, the 24.6‑inch display is described as a “multimedia screen” and the OLED supply is said to fit the trend of expanding from smartphone‑centric applications to larger displays in vehicles and infotainment.
Samsung Display’s mid‑size business division director Lee Jae‑ho says that “the Samsung OLED applied to the GV90 is an emblematic example where premium display meets luxury mobility, creating a new experience.” He added that “we will continue to create new values for luxury mobility based on our strengths.” The announcement indicates a new supply contract and case of applying the OLED to a vehicle, signalling a fresh entry into the all‑electric SUV market.
