According to analysts from Samsung Electronics and Poinmtech, the pre‑order of Apple’s iPhone Duo announced on October 16th has shown a noticeable surge in the market, while initial quantities have sharply fallen, opening an opportunity to expand component supply.
Apple did not disclose the pre‑order numbers in detail, but industry insiders rated those figures as exceptional. In particular, the iPhone Duo’s demand for major components such as external housing and reinforcement materials (UTG) is constrained by supply, and component yield issues have arisen even at the OEM stage responsible for final assembly. Accordingly, Apple was analyzed to have increased possibility of expanding component supply to meet its goal of selling over 6 million units.
With the introduction of new parts such as Wide Fold and other components, product lineups are expected to expand. Accordingly, Korean customers and U.S. customers aim for 12 million and 15 million units respectively. This is in view that application beyond smartphones into tablets and notebooks etc. is projected, Poinmtech expects supply benefits from both Samsung Electronics and Apple market expansion.
Such a trend emphasizes that component suppliers need to expand short‑term production, and with expected stable production yields and the launch of second‑generation product with improved performance in September, expanding component supply is projected to have positive influence on entire industry.
