In the United States, the use of AI and machine learning has exploded, prompting large data centers to seek energy efficiency constantly. Accordingly, efficient operation and cost reduction strategies are urgently needed for power grids. Webgrid and VEIR each introduced software‑based management solutions and material technologies to meet this situation.
Webgrid offers software that monitors power consumption in real time and analyzes patterns of power use such as electric vehicle charging, batteries, etc., maximizing utilization of the power grid. The platform fine‑tunes timing and quantity of power usage, easing stress on the grid and enabling companies to reallocate power flexibly whenever needed. Webgrid's CEO, Apurbe Baragaba, stressed that “data centers and new power consumers such as electric vehicles are growing rapidly; technology that manages and regulates them is essential.”
In contrast, VEIR introduced a superconducting cable that can transmit five times more power than conventional cables. The new technology moves greater amounts of power efficiently even in narrow spaces, and reduces cable thickness to 20% of current levels, cutting infrastructure costs and installation time significantly. VEIR CEO Team Haidel said “superconducting cable technology will bring innovation to high‑load grids such as data centers,” emphasizing that widespread adoption must proceed quickly.
VEIR recently secured $110 million in Series C funding and plans to invest it actively in development and deployment of superconducting cables. The solutions from Webgrid and VEIR address the cost burden and load problems associated with power grids for expanding data centers, thereby helping industry pursue a sustainable growth path.
